Reply:"Wave" petunias make a very impressive hanging basket. They are trailing and have lots of large blooms that stand out from a distance. The key to hanging basket success is keeping them watered. Especially in the heat of summer, hanging baskets dry out very quickly, even more so when the plants get large. You may have to water once or twice a day. Get used to knowing how much a totally saturated basket weighs, and then you can tell when it is dry. Also, when it is smaller, just sticking your finger in the soil will tell you. Always water until it comes running out the bottom. Also, you will want to fertilize regularly, with a low concentration of Miracle Grow type fertilizer. Good luck!
Reply:I personally love bougainvilla. It's a vine, but can be beautiful in a hanging basket - I know I have one. Most common color is magenta, but other colors are available.
Reply:Visit your local garden center, such as Lowe's or Home Depot. You'll find so many beautiful varieties, you'll have a difficult time choosing!

A lot depends on the area where you live. Make sure you choose something hardy that will grow well in your "zone." Someone in the plant department should be able to help you. A salesperson in a small, neighborhood nursery can give you individual assistance, and it might be a good idea to visit and ask questions. Sometimes plants cost a bit more in these small, privately owned stores, but usually, the owner is happy to give you the extra assistance you need in selecting and caring for the plants and flowers.

Here in central Florida, impatiens in baskets are popular. They come in all colors, and the lush plants are relatively inexpensive. Because we are having a hot, dry spell, however, they need daily watering. Petunias droop and wilt here, it's so hot.

Fuschias are pretty, so are fanflowers.

Check out the garden centers. Even Wal-Mart and K-Mart have some nice looking baskets. If you see something you like, ask questions or do some Internet research.

Whatever you choose, find out whether the plant should be placed in the shade or sun. There are variations such as full sun, part sun, morning sun only, part shade, shade, etc. Keep this in mind when you think about your plants and where you're going to put them.

Also, find out about watering requirements. You'll need to purchase a fertilizer, too, and use according to package directions. You can buy timed release, granules, or liquid, and other forms as well. Osmocote and Miracle Gro are two good brands, and there are many, many others. Some are inexpensive and work well.

Everything I know about plants and gardening, I've learned from asking questions, reading, and internet research. There are so many sources of knowledge out there. Much of it is free for the asking, and you'll enjoy the benefits of your research. You'll have beautiful plants and flowers to feast your eyes upon and bring a spot of color to your garden. Plus, you will feel a sense of accomplishment when you have lovely, healthy plants and flowers that you have nurtured and cared for.
